A Painter's DIY Squarespace Site Was Losing Him Jobs. We Rebuilt Everything.
How we turned a Squarespace template into a lead-generating WordPress site for a South Surrey painting company. First Google lead in 3 weeks.
Why Painting Is Harder to Market Than Most Trades
Painting is one of the hardest local service categories to market in the Lower Mainland. Not because the work is complicated to explain. Because every homeowner getting a quote is comparing three to five companies at the same time. They check your website. They check your competitor's website. And they decide who to call based on a 15-second gut feeling about which one looks like they will do the job right.
Connor Inouye, the owner of Bluestone Painting in South Surrey, had a website that was losing that 15-second test.
He had built it himself on Squarespace. Stock photo on the homepage. Generic tagline. No gallery of actual work. No clear path to request a quote. If you were a homeowner comparing three painters, you would skip this one. Not because of the work (Connor has 10+ years of experience and a reputation strong enough to fill his schedule through word of mouth). Because the site did not communicate any of that.
What Was Wrong With the Squarespace Site
Before (Squarespace)
- Stock photo homepage (not Connor's work)
- Generic tagline ("quality painting services")
- No gallery of actual projects
- No logo, no brand identity
- No SEO structure (no local keywords, no schema)
- No quote form above the fold
- No phone number in the header
- No service-area pages
- Invisible to Google organic search
After (WordPress)
- Custom design with real project photos
- Full brand identity (logo, colours, typography)
- Gallery organized by project type with before/after
- Service pages: interior, exterior, commercial, cabinets
- SEO: local keywords, schema, sitemap, blog
- Quote form above the fold on every service page
- Phone number in header, click-to-call on mobile
- Service areas listed by name (Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Delta)
- First organic Google lead within 3 weeks of launch
The Rebuild
The Website, Before and After
Your Website Is Being Viewed Next to Your Competitor's
A plumber gets called when a pipe bursts. That is an emergency. The homeowner is not comparison-shopping. They need someone now.
Painting does not work that way. Nobody has a painting emergency. The decision to repaint happens slowly. And once a homeowner decides to move forward, they get multiple quotes. Three is typical. Five is not unusual.
That means your website is being viewed side by side with your competitors. Not in isolation. The homeowner has three browser tabs open. They are scanning each one for the same things: does this company look professional, can I see their work, do they serve my area, and can I get a quote without jumping through hoops.
If your site loses on any of those, you lose the job. The homeowner does not call to tell you your website was not good enough. They just pick someone else. You never know the lead existed.
This is the competitive context we were building for. The site did not just need to look good. It needed to outperform the other two or three tabs.
New Brand. New Platform. New Everything.
Brand Identity
Bluestone did not have a logo, a colour palette, or a typography system. The Squarespace site used default template styling. We started from scratch. New logo. Colour palette built around Bluestone's name (blue tones with a warm accent that photographs well against residential exteriors). Typography that reads clean on mobile.
A painting company's brand needs to signal quality craftsmanship. If the website itself looks thrown together, why would a homeowner trust the paint job to be any different?
Platform Migration
Squarespace to WordPress on SiteGround. WordPress gives full control over SEO (meta tags, schema, sitemap structure, plugin flexibility). SiteGround gives speed. A Squarespace template loads what Squarespace decides to load. On WordPress we control every script, every stylesheet, every image size.
Conversion Architecture
This is where most web designers stop at "make it look nice." We built every page around a specific question: what does a homeowner need to see on this page to take the next step?
- Homepage: hero image of real Bluestone work, core services with icons, "Get a Free Quote" above the fold, phone number in the header, testimonials visible without scrolling
- Service pages: interior, exterior, commercial, cabinet refinishing. Each one has service-specific copy, relevant project photos, and a quote form
- Gallery: organized by project type. Before and after shots where available. This page does the most selling on a painting company's site
- About page: Connor's story, the team, the "no subcontracting" policy, the 2-year workmanship warranty
The Copy Decisions That Actually Matter
"No subcontracting" as a headline, not a footnote. Bluestone's team shows up on every job. Connor does not send subcontractors. In painting, subcontracting is common. Homeowners know this because they have been burned by it. We put "no subcontracting" front and centre in the copy. It is a trust signal that separates Bluestone from half the market.
Service area specificity. We did not say "serving the Lower Mainland." We listed Surrey, Langley, White Rock, and Delta by name. The painter that says "we serve White Rock" wins over the one that says "serving the Greater Vancouver area."
The 45-minute room turnaround. Bluestone uses 100% acrylic latex paint. Rooms are usable within 45 minutes of the final coat. That is a real selling point for families who cannot shut down a room for a full day. Most painters do not even mention dry time.
Three Weeks to First Google Lead
This number is worth sitting with. Three weeks from launch to a lead from Google.
Most SEO timelines are measured in months. Six to twelve months is the standard answer for when organic traffic starts producing leads. And for competitive head terms like "painters near me," that is true.
But here is what happened. Connor is active in BNI (Business Network International). His GAINS profile linked to the old Squarespace site. When we launched the new site, that link started pointing to a real, optimized, conversion-ready website instead of a template with no quote form.
Someone found Connor's BNI profile, clicked through to the website, liked what they saw, and requested a quote. Within three weeks of launch.
This is the part most agencies miss when they talk about SEO timelines. Your existing referral network, your directory listings, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles: all of those start sending traffic to the new site immediately. And if the new site actually converts, leads come faster than the organic rankings alone would suggest.
The organic rankings followed. The 87% increase in engaged sessions and 76% increase in pageviews came from the combination: better referral conversion plus growing organic visibility. But the first lead came from a profile link that had been sitting there all along, now pointing to a site worth clicking on.
"We used Beazy Marketing for our logo and website and couldn't be happier. Chasen and his team were fast, professional and easy to work with. We continue to use Beazy Marketing for our website needs and would recommend them to anyone looking for marketing help."
Frequently Asked
How long did the website rebuild take?
From kickoff to launch, the full rebuild including brand identity, copywriting, and development took approximately 4-6 weeks. The timeline depends on how quickly we can align on brand direction and get feedback on drafts.
Why move from Squarespace to WordPress?
Control. WordPress gives us full access to SEO settings, page speed optimization, schema markup, and plugin flexibility that Squarespace locks down. For a local service business that depends on Google, that control directly impacts results. SiteGround hosting adds server-level caching and security that complements WordPress well.
Can you help a painting company that already has a WordPress site?
Yes. Most of what we built for Bluestone (conversion architecture, SEO structure, copy, brand) can be applied to an existing WordPress site without a full rebuild. It depends on how much of the current foundation is usable. We start with a site audit to figure out what is worth keeping and what needs to change.
What does the maintenance retainer include?
WordPress updates, plugin updates, security monitoring, hosting management, and minor content changes. A website that gets built and abandoned starts breaking within months. We keep it running.
